Abstract

Forests can play a fundamental role in mitigating climate change. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the potential for carbon sequestration in the forests of the patrimony of the Costa Sur Agroforestry Enterprise, located in the Artemisa province. The amount of carbon for each one of the components of the forestry patrimony of this entity was determined and for the processing of the information was used the automated system SUMFOR v. 2.16. The enterprise assets constitute an important carbon sink, accumulating 10 010.2 Mt in 2014, which represents 194.3 t / ha, with natural forests being the largest carbon reservoir. The amount of carbon retained in the forests is equivalent to the removal of 40 040.8 Mt of CO2 from the atmosphere. Alternatives were also valued, with which the enterprise would guarantee to increase its contribution to the mitigation of climate change.
