Carbon sequestration by Macurijes Agro-Forestry Enterprise patrimony, Pinar del Río province, Cuba

Abstract
The potential of carbon retention is evaluated in the forests of “Macurijes” Agro forestry Enterprise patrimony, located in Pinar del Río, Cuba. Taking as a base the automated system SUMFOR v. 2.16 and data from the Forest Ordination Project, year 2014, as well as surface and volume data in plantations and natural forests, the capacity of carbon retention was determined corresponding to (2014) and the projection of a base line of carbon retention for 10 years. The enterprise constitutes an important drain of carbon when retaining 17 176, 3 Mt in 2014 equivalent to the removal of 62 979, 76 Mt of CO2, having in this removal the biggest protagonism the established plantations and the natural forests. Mitigation alternative were also valuated being the most promissory the increase of increments of natural Forests and plantations and to duplicate the annual surface of plantation.
