Abstract
La Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas proclamó el 2010 como Año Internacional de la Diversidad Biológica con el objetivo de incrementar más el interés de la comunidad mundial hacia el grave problema que constituye la pérdida continua y en ascenso de la biodiversidad.
La amenaza más grave a la diversidad biológica es la degradación y pérdida de los bosques, que albergan una gran parte de ella, así como los humedales y otros ecosistemas. Aproximadamente el 45% de los bosque originales ha desaparecido por diversas causas en el pasado siglo. Es por ello que se requieren acciones urgentes a nivel internacional para reducir de forma significativa el ritmo de pérdida de la biodiversidad.
El V Congreso Forestal de Cuba, que se celebrará en abril del 2011, será el escenario adecuado para intercambiar conocimientos y experiencias acerca de estos temas que requieren de cooperación y coordinación internacional, por las consecuencias que trae aparejados no solo para la biodiversidad, sino también para el sustento del hombre. Por el bien de las generaciones actuales y futuras… ¡hay que salvar a nuestro planeta!
