Evaluation dasométrica and carbon removed in the hondones, Marsh of Zapata, Matanzas, Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
The atmospheric carbon retention by forests is a fundamental strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change. In this context, the carbon retained in the area of Los Hondones, Ciénaga de Zapata, Matanzas, Cuba, was evaluated during the period 2020–2024, aiming to determine its contribution as an environmental service subject to payment for removed carbon. Eleven permanent sampling plots distributed across 500 hectares were used, where dendrometric variables such as bark thickness, diameter at 1.30 m above the ground, total height, and volume were measured. The automated system SUMFOR v-5.02 was employed to calculate retained carbon, and a descriptive analysis was performed using Statgraphics Centurion XVI. The results showed an increase in all measured variables: the average diameter grew by 2.53 cm, total height by 2.43 m, and total volume by 17,973.34 m³ between 2020 and 2024. Regarding carbon, the largest accumulation was observed in biomass (69% in 2024), followed by soil (30%) and necromass (6%). During the evaluated period, total carbon retention increased by 21,102 t, representing a net removal of -11,627.47 t of CO2 in the last year. These values were certified through Resolution 28/2024 by the Ministry of Agriculture, validating the area’s contribution to achieving climate mitigation policies.
