Analog forestry: an alternative to take into account to support the Tarea Vida
Main Article Content
Abstract
The application of Analog Forestry is essential as a sustainable alternative for the recovery of salinized soils, since it promotes ecological restoration by imitating natural forests, improving biodiversity, soil structure and its long-term productive capacity. Soil salinization in the Guantánamo Valley is high, more than 15% of the national agricultural area is affected by this phenomenon, aggravated by climate change and saline intrusion. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of Analog Forestry as an alternative for the recovery of salinized soils and its adaptation to the State Plan for Confronting Climate Change (Tarea Vida). It was implemented in 14 integrated forest farms, where demonstration plots were established with 10 species selected for their tolerance to salinity and ecological functions. The results showed a significant reduction in salinity in the treated plots, evidenced by the decrease of indicator species such as Portulaca sp and the increase in the survival of forest and fruit species. In addition, an improvement in soil fertility and an increase in biodiversity, including the return of wildlife, were observed. Analog Forestry proved to be an effective tool not only for ecological restoration, but also for strengthening the local economy and promoting community participation. It was concluded that this technique is viable for application in other areas with similar conditions, contributing to climate change adaptation and food security.
