Proposal of management actions for the recovery of the vegetation in the margins of Guisa river
Main Article Content
Abstract
Riverbank conservation is critical for maintaining aquatic ecosystems, preventing soil erosion, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring water quality for the communities and wildlife that depend on these resources. The study aimed to propose management actions for restoring vegetation along the banks of the Guisa River in Granma, Cuba, due to degradation caused by deforestation, erosion, and inappropriate practices. A three-km section of the river was analyzed, where forest and floristic inventories were conducted in 100-m² plots, with the identification of woody species and dasometric parameters. In addition, surveys were conducted with local producers to evaluate management practices. The results showed that 40% of the trees had diameters less than 10 cm, and only 12% exceeded 50 cm. Thirty species were identified, with an equal proportion of native and introduced species, and greater diversity on the right bank (93.3%) compared to the left (60%). The floods affected the left bank the most, reducing the presence of young trees. Seventy-five percent of the producers were practicing conservation practices, although a lack of training was evident. In conclusion, an action plan was proposed that includes reforestation, environmental training, and sustainable techniques to improve vegetation cover and micro-watershed management, involving the community and local entities.
