Estimate of the carbon and nitrogen retained in the lumberman biomass of Dychrostachys cinerea var. africana Brenan & Brummitt

Abstract
The characterization of plant formations intended for biomass production is essential for the identification, monitoring, and efficient management of forest resources. This study focused on estimating the carbon and nitrogen retained in the dry woody biomass of Dychrostachys cinérea var. africana (marabou) in the municipality of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Camagüey, Cuba. An inventory was conducted in 90 (25 m²) plots, calculating the mean diameter for three diameter categories and the aboveground green woody biomass per hectare, using mathematical models specific to this species. Total biomass was estimated by multiplying the obtained values by the effective area and converted to dry weight using laboratory-determined coefficients. Carbon and nitrogen retention coefficients were subsequently applied to calculate the total quantities retained. The results indicate that the dry woody biomass of marabou retains 247,636.53 tons of carbon and 2,267.19 tons of nitrogen in the study area, with average values per hectare of 21.77 and 0.2 tons, respectively. The equations developed are specific to this species and easy to apply in practice, contributing to the sustainable management of forest resources and their use in clean energy generation and charcoal production.
