Trichostigma octandrum (L.) H. Walter y Calamus sp. Valuation of the present situation of two vegetable species in Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study of plant species such as Trichostigma octandrum (guaniquiqui) and Calamus sp. (rattan) is crucial due to their value as Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs), essential for crafts, the local economy, and environmental conservation in Cuba. This study aimed to assess the current status of both species to inform sustainable harvesting strategies. A morphological and taxonomic characterization was conducted through a literature review, their fibers and artisanal uses were compared, and their ecological and productive conditions were analyzed through direct observations and testimonies from artisans. The results showed that guaniquiqui, native to Cuba, has advantages in handling and fiber extraction, while rattan, an introduced species, requires adaptation and complex techniques. Unsustainable use of guaniquiqui was identified, with 60% waste in processing and a lack of regulation in its exploitation. Three key components were proposed for its management: a detailed national inventory, a strengthened legal framework, and technical training. It was concluded that both species are valuable resources, but the guaniquiqui, due to its adaptability and lesser complexity, offers greater potential for profitable and sustainable use, provided conservation and proper management measures are implemented.
