Impact of the temperatura increase on forests of Guamuhaya mountain
Main Article Content
Abstract
Studying the impact of rising temperatures on the forests of the Guamuhaya massif is crucial due to the vulnerability of mountain ecosystems to climate change. This study aimed to assess the extinction risks of endemic and threatened tree species in this region of Cuba, proposing adaptation strategies. Fifteen endemic species were selected, classified into three groups according to their altitudinal distribution (high, intermediate, and low), and analyzed using the RCP-8.5 climate scenario, projecting temperature changes for 2030, 2050, and 2070. The results showed that the highest-altitude species (≥700 m) would face increases of up to 7.45°C, which would cause altitudinal shifts greater than 580 m, bringing them to the brink of extinction. Intermediate-risk species (450–700 m) would also undergo critical migrations, exceeding the maximum altitude of the massif. Only the lowest-altitude species (<450 m) would maintain viable habitats. It was concluded that in situ and ex situ conservation, including cryopreservation and relocation to protected areas, is urgently needed to preserve this biodiversity.
