Composition of a selected semi-decided forest area on lapiés, Sierra de Bamburanao, Yaguajay, Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study of semi-deciduous forests in Cuba is crucial due to their high biodiversity and vulnerability to human activities. This study aimed to analyze the floristic composition of a fragment of semi-deciduous forest on lapiés in the Sierra de Bamburanao, Yaguajay, evaluating its structure and diversity after an environmental impact caused by a power line. Sampling was carried out in three transects (two of 80 m² and one of 100 m²), recording plant species in all strata and developing diagrammatic profiles. Sixty-one species (54 genera, 37 families) were identified, including Orchidaceae, Meliaceae, Rubiaceae, and Sapindaceae. Four species were endemic to Cuba (6.6%), and the majority (98.3%) were native, with only one introduced (1.6%). The geoelements showed a predominance of Antillean (33.3%) and Neotropical (31.6%) species. The forest structure included 36 tree species, 9 shrubs, 3 herbaceous plants, 7 lianas, and 6 epiphytes, with predominant uses as honey (29 species) and timber (28 species). It was concluded that the area acts as a germplasm bank, requiring conservation measures to maintain its ecological stability and function as a biodiversity reservoir.
