Abstract

Valuing the ecosystem services of Avicennia germinans (black mangrove) is crucial for its conservation and the sustainable management of mangroves, highly productive but threatened coastal ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the ecosystem services provided by this species at Guanímar Beach, Artemisa, Cuba, highlighting its ecological function and anthropogenic uses. The species was characterized through a literature review, and interviews were conducted with 27 local residents to identify its traditional uses. In addition, ecosystem services were classified according to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. The results showed that A. germinans provides 11 services, including wood provision, climate regulation (carbon sequestration), biodiversity support, and cultural benefits. Residents use its wood for poles, fuel, and tools, although its medicinal uses are unknown. Potential sustainable uses were identified, such as plantations for coastal protection, honey production, and as a carbon sink due to its high wood density (1,090 g/cm³). It was concluded that this species is essential for coastal ecosystems, and its appreciation allows for the design of management strategies that integrate conservation and local use.
