Sanitation of coconut trees affected by the Eriophyes guerreronis mite in the municipality of Baracoa, Cuba

Abstract
Control of the Eriophyes guerreronis mite is crucial for the sustainability of coconut plantations, given their economic and food value. This study aimed to reduce mite infestation levels in coconut palms in the municipality of Baracoa, Cuba, through integrated sanitation strategies. Two methods (total and partial sanitation) were evaluated in four production units between 2011 and 2012, applied to plants with grades 3 and 4 damage. Total sanitation involved the removal and burning of dry leaves, affected fruit, and rachis, while partial sanitation removed only the three youngest bunches. Fifteen plants were monitored monthly for a year, assessing damage using a pre-established scale. The results showed a significant reduction in infestation, with healthy fruit and increased cross-pollination observed the following month. The conclusions highlighted that both methods effectively reduced mite damage, contributing to the sustainable management of the crop.
