Experiences obtained in an area of associated crops in an agroforestal system in the municipality of Baracoa, province Guantánamo

Abstract
The implementation of agroforestry systems is key to promoting agricultural sustainability, mitigating the environmental impact of traditional systems. This study aimed to evaluate experiences in an area of intercropping within an agroforestry system in Baracoa, Guantánamo. A 0.30 ha area was studied on a cacao farm, where fruit (guava, mango, citrus) and forest (najesi, mahogany) species were planted, combined with short-cycle crops (tomato, corn, and beans). Practices included crop rotation, soil preparation, and conservation measures on slopes of 9%. The results showed an increase in production, with mango and guava showing the highest yields, while tomatoes, corn, and beans optimized land use. Furthermore, biodiversity was improved, degraded soils were restored, and producers' food and economic security was strengthened. It was concluded that this integrated agroforestry system optimizes land use, provides environmental and socioeconomic benefits, and represents a viable alternative for sustainable agriculture.
