Abstract

The agroforestry system based on Psidium salutare (H.B.K.) Berg in the La Lechuza area, Pinar del Río, presents low levels of productivity, which limits its economic potential in the region. The objective of this work was to evaluate the functioning levels of this production system. A diagnosis was used based on indicators of efficiency, conservation of natural resources, diversity, fragility, capacity for change, self-sufficiency and recycling. The methodology was based on the participatory approach. The results showed that, although Psidium salutare production has improved slightly in recent years, the system depends excessively on this monoculture, which limits diversification and economic stability. Despite the lack of adequate conservation measures for soil and water, the area has favorable biological diversity thanks to its proximity to other natural ecosystems. Return on costs is uncertain due to dependence on seasonal production, which increases risks for producers. It is concluded that, although the system offers environmental and economic benefits, it is necessary to integrate conservation, diversification and adaptation practices to climate change to improve its resilience and long-term sustainability.
